Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging
- What does it really mean to be diverse?
- Is there such a thing as too much diversity?
- How do we make sure our employees are diverse enough?
- What are some ways you've seen companies try to promote diversity?
The Definition of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging
Diversity means having a wide range of different types of individuals from different races, ethnicities, socioeconomics, and cultures present at the company. It’s a group of diverse individuals working together in one space.
We define inclusion as an organizational culture that values diversity and fosters a sense of community among its members. In simple terms, including people means making sure everyone feels included.
Finally, belonging is the feeling of security, comfort, and connection when there is a feeling of safety, trust, and belongingness for a person within a specific group. It is when someone feels accepted, included, and identified by others who share similar characteristics.
How do we promote diversity in the workplace?
Workplace diversity isn’t just about having black men working alongside white women. It’s about creating an environment where everyone feels welcome and comfortable expressing his or her thoughts and ideas.
There are many ways to promote diversity in the workplace. Some companies choose to offer scholarship programs to minority students, while others offer paid internship opportunities to female candidates. Still, others encourage employees to volunteer at local charities.
In this world where changes are so fast, technological advances are making it easier than ever for people to work remotely and do business across borders.
